There’s no reason to wait for warmer weather to have your engagement session in Kansas City. If you ask me, I think winter is the most romantic season- all the holidays, the lights, cuddles, and time spent with loved ones will set the mood on its own. But let’s be real- winters in Kansas City often mean temps below freezing. This may make choosing a location for your engagement photos a little more challenging. But, no worries! Kansas City has so much to offer all year round. Here are some ideas from a photographer’s perspective to get you thinking and planning your own session!
1. Your home
What better way to stay warm than to just stay in bed? There’s a few reasons to do your engagement session in your home. Obviously, you are going to be most comfortable there. Have pets? This is the easiest way to include them in your engagement session! Another bonus? If you are planning on printing and hanging your photos (please do this- your photos aren’t meant to live on social media alone), they will match your home decor perfectly! No worrying about throwing off your color schemes!
2. Union Station
Union Station is a perfect escape from the chilly weather! There’s no permit fee between Thanksgiving and Christmas (and if you go outside of this time frame, it’s only $75). They have Christmas decor up before Thanksgiving, including the biggest tree I’ve ever seen. So if you’re not a scrooge and want to embrace the holidays for your engagement session, this may be the perfect location for you!
3. Coffee shop
There’s a ton of great coffee shops in Kansas City to have your engagement session in. They all have their own unique character. Most have sitting areas with comfy couches. Grab your favorite brew and get cozy! After you bundle up to leave, you can grab a few quick shots outside for some urban variety.
You probably thought this entire article would be ways to avoid the colder weather, but sometimes it’s best to just embrace it (maybe in smaller bursts though)! This snowy engagement session featured some of the most iconic snow-capped Kansas City buildings. And yeah, it was pretty cold, but what you can’t see in this photo is the sweats, coats, scarves, and gloves that were behind me. Take frequent breaks to bundle up and stay warm!
5. Plaza (or anywhere else with lights)
Full disclosure: this photo was actually taken in Chicago BUT there are plenty of places in Kansas City to capture the essence of Christmas. The Country Club Plaza and Crown Center are decked out with lights this time of year, and there’s plenty of other places around the metro too. Just make sure your photographer is experienced with these kinds of lighting situations.
Here’s some other ideas that I’d LOVE to do this winter (*cough, cough* discounted engagement session, anyone?!)
+Ice skating at Crown Center
+Christmas tree farms
+Skiing/snowboarding at Snow Creek
Hopefully, this article can give you some locations to start with when planning your own winter engagement session here in Kansas City. Maybe it’s even inspired your own ideas! If you’re still not sold on these locations, think of what you and your partner enjoy doing together. Is it bowling? Pizza? Playing board games? Any of these can be turned into a lifestyle session to get engagement photos that celebrate your unique relationship. The possibilities are endless! Need more help?
