MEET  the  #squad

I love to cuddle almost as much as I love to lick the couch. Mom calls me a “perfect little princess puppy,” even with my missing tail! I can be a little shy around new people, but as long as my mom is close by, you’ll probably get a kiss.

I like to play with puppies even though I’m 15 myself. My favorite things to bark at include dogs, horses, and dinosaurs on TV- which means mom can’t watch Jurassic Park anymore (she’s still bitter about it). I’m missing a toe on one of my paws, but I make up for it by sticking my tongue out to be extra cute.

I’ve got a hippie heart with a rocker soul. Plus, I care a whole lot about the people I love.

My “hippie heart” comes from my love of being outside and exploring nature. The place that feels most like home is Mauna Kea, on the big island of Hawaii. I hike up there in the middle of the night and wait for the moon to come down and the stars to come out. The amount of stars you can see is absolutely mind blowing. You can even see the Milky Way and it’s just so incredible. If you ever want to feel unbelievably connected to the Earth, you gotta go.

The “rocker soul” comes through when you see my tattoos and motorcycle. I think tattoos are badass and love talking about what mine mean (keep reading) and learning about other people’s. The love of motorcycles goes blood deep. My dad and uncle have been riding them since I was a toddler. I’ve got a picture of myself on the back of my dad’s bike when I was 3, so he couldn’t say no when I asked for my own.

There’s nothing more important than the people I care about. Whether it’s seeing my family once a week or talking to my boyfriend’s mom every day, I’m always there for my people. It makes me happy to see them happy and to support what they do- which bleeds into my relationships with clients, too. I want you to be unapologetically yourself, and to reflect that in your photos. No matter how you celebrate your love, I will capture it all.

HEEEEEY,
I'M MIKAELA

So what's up with the killer whale logo?

The brand’s logo is based on the tattoo I have of an orca and some Hawaiian florals. The florals represent Mauna Kea and feeling connected to the Earth. The orca represents even more.

When I was in college, I had to write a bunch of papers about the PR perspective of Seaworld. This turned into learning a ton about killer whales and realizing how incredible they are. People talk about the existence of aliens or other intelligent creatures, but no one realizes that they exist right here under the water. It’s amazing.

Orcas stay in their individual pods for their entire lives, staying with their mothers in this matriarchal system. Each pod has its own language, culture, and diet, all of which is passed down from generation to generation within the pod. Orcas aren’t like people who speak the same language- they can only communicate with their specific family members within their pod. That’s why family is so important to them.

Killer whales have an emotive center of their brain that’s 10 times larger than humans. That means they feel emotions more intensely than we do- the good and the bad. When a pod member dies, orcas have been documented carrying the dead corpses around with them (Google Tahlequah, the orca that carried her daughter for 17 days). It doesn’t get more emotionally connected than that.

These whales show how important culture, tradition, and family are in becoming who you are. The people you surround yourself with mould the person you become, just like the pod is what supports the orca. That’s why it’s so necessary to reflect who you are and the people that got you here in your wedding photos. So you can look back on these moments and remember your pod.
